వివరణ · Explanation
తొమ్మిది · పది. పది తరువాత — పదకొండు, పన్నెండు.
After ఎనిమిది come తొమ్మిది (9) and పది (10). The numbers just above ten are built on పది itself: పదకొండు (11), పన్నెండు (12), and the row runs on in the same way to ఇరవై (20). Learn తొమ్మిది and పది today as firmly as the first eight; every larger number in Telugu is assembled out of these ten pieces.
ఇరవై · ముప్పై · నలభై · యాభై. వంద · వెయ్యి. సున్నా.
The tens are ఇరవై (20), ముప్పై (30), నలభై (40), యాభై (50), and they run on to తొంభై (90). Above them stand వంద (100) and వెయ్యి (1000). Build the big numbers exactly as you would expect: ఇరవై ఒకటి is 21, రెండు వందలు is 200, రెండు వేలు is 2000 — the plural of వంద and వెయ్యి doing the counting. And the number you need for an empty hand is సున్నా, zero.
'రెండు పుస్తకాలు ఉన్నాయి' — వస్తువులు అమహత్తు. 'ఉన్నాయి', 'ఉన్నారు' కాదు.
Here is the rule to fix now, because it will follow you through the whole course. Things — books, chairs, buses, fruit — are అమహత్తు, non-human, and in the plural they take the -ఆయి endings: రెండు పుస్తకాలు ఉన్నాయి, పది కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి, మూడు బస్సులు వస్తున్నాయి. The forms ఉన్నారు and వస్తున్నారు belong to people only. In the singular you cannot hear the difference (ఒక పుస్తకం ఉంది, ఆమె ఉంది), so it is the plural that you have to get right. People, as it happens, are counted with a different set of numerals altogether — that is the next lesson.

అభ్యాసం · Practice
మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
ఒకటి నుండి ఇరవై వరకు బిగ్గరగా లెక్కించండి. ఇప్పుడు ధరలు చెప్పండి — 'ఈ పుస్తకం ధర వంద. ఈ కలం ధర పది.'
Count aloud from ఒకటి to ఇరవై, then say the tens on their own: ఇరవై, ముప్పై, నలభై, యాభై. Now price four things around you in full sentences — ఈ పుస్తకం ధర వంద, ఈ కలం ధర పది — and finish with a count of what is in the room: ఇక్కడ పది కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి. Listen to yourself say ఉన్నాయి and not ఉన్నారు each time.
