వివరణ · Explanation
ఒకటి · రెండు · మూడు · నాలుగు · ఐదు · ఆరు · ఏడు · ఎనిమిది.
These are the counting words, the ones you say when you count aloud or give a number by itself: ఒకటి, రెండు, మూడు, నాలుగు, ఐదు, ఆరు, ఏడు, ఎనిమిది. Say the row out loud several times in order and then backwards — the order itself is half the work, because Telugu builds every higher number out of these eight.
సంఖ్య ముందు, పేరు తరువాత — 'మూడు పుస్తకాలు', 'ఆరు పండ్లు'.
When you count actual things, the numeral stands in front of the noun and the noun goes into the plural: రెండు కలాలు, మూడు పుస్తకాలు, నాలుగు కుర్చీలు, ఐదు గదులు, ఆరు పండ్లు. That plural -లు is the one you have already seen in నీళ్ళు, బట్టలు and కూరగాయలు. Nothing else in the sentence changes — the verb still comes last: నా సంచిలో మూడు పుస్తకాలు ఉన్నాయి.
'ఒకటి' ఒంటరిగా. పేరు ముందు 'ఒక' — 'ఒక పుస్తకం'.
One number breaks the pattern, and it is the first one. Standing alone it is ఒకటి, but in front of a noun it shortens to ఒక: ఒక పుస్తకం, ఒక కలం, ఒక ఇల్లు. Notice too that the noun then stays singular — ఒక పుస్తకం, not పుస్తకాలు. ఒక also does the work of English 'a': ఒక బహుమతి కొంటున్నాను is simply 'I am buying a gift'. All the others — రెండు, మూడు, నాలుగు and the rest — keep exactly the same shape before a noun as they have on their own.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
ఒకటి నుండి ఎనిమిది వరకు బిగ్గరగా లెక్కించండి. ఇప్పుడు మీ గదిలో వస్తువులు లెక్కించండి — 'ఇక్కడ రెండు కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి. ఒక బల్ల ఉంది.'
Count from ఒకటి to ఎనిమిది out loud, then back down to ఒకటి. Now look around your room and say what is there in full sentences: ఇక్కడ రెండు కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి, ఒక బల్ల ఉంది, నాలుగు పుస్తకాలు ఉన్నాయి. Watch the two things at once — ఒక with a singular noun, every other numeral with a plural.
