వివరణ · Explanation

'రాము పుస్తకం' — రెండు పదాలు పక్కపక్కన. మధ్యలో వేరే మాట లేదు.

To say whose something is, Telugu puts the owner first and the thing second, and stops there: రాము పుస్తకం 'Ramu's book', అమ్మ చీర 'mother's sari', బడి పేరు 'the school's name'. There is no word for 'of' and no apostrophe — the order does the whole job. A few nouns change shape a little in that first slot, and you have already met them as pairs: ఇల్లు becomes ఇంటి (మా ఇంటి తలుపు), స్నేహితుడు becomes స్నేహితుడి (నా స్నేహితుడి ఇల్లు). It is the same form you used before మీద, కింద and దగ్గర.

'రాము యొక్క పుస్తకం' — 'యొక్క' కూడా సరే. మాటల్లో ఎక్కువగా 'రాము పుస్తకం'.

యొక్క is the explicit word for 'of'. It is perfectly correct and you will see it everywhere in written Telugu — headings, notices, translations. In ordinary speech people leave it out. So: write రాము యొక్క పుస్తకం if you want to be formal or very precise, and say రాము పుస్తకం when you are talking.

నా · నీ · మీ · మా · వాళ్ళ · తన. 'ఇది ఎవరి కలం?' — 'ఇది నా కలం.'

Beside the నా, నీ, మీ, మా you already have, take వాళ్ళ 'their' and తన 'his own, her own'. తన always points back to the subject of its own sentence: రాము తన పుస్తకం చదువుతున్నాడు means Ramu is reading his own book, while రాము అతని పుస్తకం చదువుతున్నాడు means the book is somebody else's. Two more habits to copy: with family members Telugu says మా అమ్మ, మా అన్న where English says 'my mother, my brother'; and to ask, put ఎవరి before the noun — ఇది ఎవరి కలం? — or use ఎవరిది on its own — ఇది ఎవరిది? The answer to that one is నాది 'mine', మీది 'yours'.

Walk through your room and name things out loud, giving each one an owner: ఇది నా పుస్తకం, ఇది మా అమ్మ చీర, ఇది మా ఇంటి తలుపు. Then ask about each one — ఇది ఎవరిది? — and answer in a full sentence. Finish by describing a neighbour's family in two lines using వాళ్ళ: వాళ్ళ ఇల్లు ఇక్కడ, వాళ్ళ అమ్మాయి పేరు ….
