వివరణ · Explanation

'బల్ల మీద' — పదం మొదట, 'మీద' చివర. ఇలాగే కుర్చీ కింద, గోడ దగ్గర.

English puts 'on, under, near' before the noun; Telugu puts them after it. బల్ల మీద is word for word 'table on', కుర్చీ కింద is 'chair under', గోడ దగ్గర is 'wall near'. They are separate words, so leave a space — unlike -లో and -తో, which are glued on.

బల్ల మీద, గోడ మీద, మంచం మీద, కుర్చీ కింద, బడి దగ్గర. ఇల్లు — ఇంటి దగ్గర. ఊరు — ఊరి దగ్గర.

For most nouns nothing changes at all: బల్ల మీద, గోడ మీద, మంచం మీద, కుర్చీ కింద, బడి దగ్గర, గుడి దగ్గర. A few take their possessive shape first, and they are the same ones you met with -లో: ఇల్లు becomes ఇంటి (ఇంటి దగ్గర) and ఊరు becomes ఊరి (ఊరి దగ్గర).

'దగ్గర' మనుషులతో — నా దగ్గర పుస్తకం ఉంది. మీ దగ్గర కలం ఉందా?

దగ్గర also works with a person, and then it means 'with, on me, in my keeping': నా దగ్గర పుస్తకం ఉంది is 'I have a book with me', మీ దగ్గర కలం ఉందా? is 'do you have a pen on you?'. Compare this with నాకు పుస్తకం ఉంది from the earlier lesson: నాకు is what you own, నా దగ్గర is what is with you right now.
