వివరణ · Explanation
-తో — 'కలిసి' అని అర్థం. అమ్మతో, నాన్నతో, అన్నతో, గీతతో, పిల్లలతో.
Add -తో straight onto the noun and you have 'with that person': అమ్మతో, నాన్నతో, గీతతో, పిల్లలతో. Nouns that end in -డు change that ending to -డి first: స్నేహితుడు gives స్నేహితుడితో, అబ్బాయి gives అబ్బాయితో with no change at all. The pronouns are నాతో, నీతో, మాతో, మీతో, అతనితో, ఆమెతో, వాళ్ళతో.
-తో ఇంకొక పని — 'దేనితో?' కలంతో రాస్తున్నాను. చేతితో తింటున్నాను.
The same -తో names the thing you do something with: కలంతో రాస్తున్నాను (I am writing with a pen), చేతితో తింటున్నాను (I am eating with my hand). English uses 'with' for both company and instrument, and so does Telugu — one marker covers the two. The questions are ఎవరితో? for a person and దేనితో? for a thing.
'పక్కన' — దగ్గరగా. నా పక్కన, రవి పక్కన, ఇంటి పక్కన.
పక్కన means 'beside, next to', and unlike -తో it is a separate word standing after the noun: నా పక్కన ఉన్నాడు (he is beside me), రవి పక్కన, ఇంటి పక్కన. Notice ఇల్లు becomes ఇంటి before it — that stem change is worth learning now, because several more words behave the same way.

అభ్యాసం · Practice
మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
ఇప్పుడు మీరే బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి — 'నేను … తో మాట్లాడుతున్నాను.' 'నేను … తో బడికి వెళుతున్నాను.'
Name four people in your day and say what you do with each: నేను అమ్మతో మాట్లాడుతున్నాను, నేను స్నేహితుడితో ఆడుతున్నాను, నేను అక్కతో బడికి వెళుతున్నాను. Then say two things with an instrument — కలంతో రాస్తున్నాను, చేతితో తింటున్నాను. Finish by asking someone ఎవరితో మాట్లాడుతున్నారు? and answering it as they would.
