వివరణ · Explanation

వస్తువు కర్మ — '-ని' లేకపోయినా సరే. మనిషి కర్మ — '-ని', '-ను' తప్పనిసరి. 'అబ్బాయిని పిలుస్తున్నాను' — సరి. 'అబ్బాయి పిలుస్తున్నాను' — తప్పు.

Last lesson the marker was optional on a thing. On a person it is not. Telugu sorts nouns into మహత్తు (people) and అమహత్తు (everything else), and a మహత్తు object always wears its ending: నేను అబ్బాయిని పిలుస్తున్నాను. Drop it and the sentence simply breaks — a Telugu ear waits for that ending on a person and hears నేను అబ్బాయి పిలుస్తున్నాను as two subjects colliding.

అబ్బాయి + ని = అబ్బాయిని. అమ్మాయి + ని = అమ్మాయిని. గీత + ను = గీతను. రవి + ని = రవిని.

The same rule of thumb as before decides which ending you hear: -ni after ఇ, ఈ, ఎ, ఏ, and -nu everywhere else. Names behave exactly like other nouns — గీత ends in ఆ so it takes -nu (గీతను), while రవి ends in ఇ so it takes -ni (రవిని).

ఎవరు — కర్త. ఎవరిని — కర్మ. 'ఎవరు పిలుస్తున్నారు?' 'ఎవరిని పిలుస్తున్నారు?' — రెండూ వేరు.

Question words take the ending too, and the difference matters. ఎవరు పిలుస్తున్నారు? asks who is doing the calling; ఎవరిని పిలుస్తున్నారు? asks whom they are calling. Notice that the question word stays right where the answer will stand — nothing moves to the front of the sentence.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఇప్పుడు మీరే బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి — 'నేను రవిని పిలుస్తున్నాను.' కొన్ని పేర్లు చెప్పండి, ప్రతి పేరు కర్మ రూపం చెప్పండి. ఇప్పుడు ప్రశ్న అడగండి — 'మీరు ఎవరిని కలుసుకుంటున్నారు?'

Take four names of people you know. Say each one as the object of a verb: నేను … ని పిలుస్తున్నాను, నేను … ను కలుసుకుంటున్నాను, checking each time whether the name ends in ఇ or in some other vowel. Then ask the question aloud — మీరు ఎవరిని పిలుస్తున్నారు? — and answer it yourself. Keep the verb at the end every single time.
