వివరణ · Explanation

'బట్టలు ఉతుకుతున్నాను.' 'కూరగాయలు కడుగుతున్నాను.' 'చెయ్యి కడుగుతున్నాను.'

Telugu has two verbs where English has one. ఉతుకు is used for cloth and for nothing else — బట్టలు, చీర, చొక్కా. కడుగు is for everything else you rinse with water: hands, feet, vessels, vegetables. Saying బట్టలు కడుగుతున్నాను is the slip every learner makes once; tie ఉతుకు to cloth in your mind and leave it there.

'స్నానం చేస్తున్నాను.' — స్నానం + చేయు.

There is no single Telugu verb for 'to bathe'. You take the noun స్నానం, 'a bath', and put చేయు after it: స్నానం చేస్తున్నాను, స్నానం చేస్తున్నారు, స్నానం చేస్తున్నాడు. Only చేయు changes for person; the noun in front of it never moves. Telugu builds a great many verbs this way, and you will meet more of them as you go.

'బట్టలు ఉన్నాయి.' 'చొక్కా ఉంది.' 'చీర ఉంది.'

బట్టలు is plural in Telugu even when you mean one person's clothes, so it takes ఉన్నాయి. Single garments are singular and take ఉంది: చీర is the sari, చొక్కా the shirt. Both are అమహత్తు — things, not people — so ఉంది and ఉన్నాయి are the right verbs and ఉన్నారు is never used with them.
