వంటింటి మాట
Sita, what is this?
This is the kitchen. I am cooking curry here.
Where is the salt?
The salt is here.
Is there water?
Yes, there is water. There is milk over there.
Thank you, Sita!
వివరణ · Explanation
ఉప్పు ఉంది. నీళ్ళు ఉన్నాయి. వాళ్ళు ఉన్నారు.
Telugu picks the existence word to match what it is talking about. One thing takes ఉంది — ఉప్పు ఉంది, కూర ఉంది. Several things take ఉన్నాయి — నీళ్ళు ఉన్నాయి, పాలు ఉన్నాయి. People, however, take ఉన్నారు — వాళ్ళు ఉన్నారు. Things and people part ways in the plural, and that split runs through the whole language.
నీళ్ళు, పాలు — ఇవి ఎప్పుడూ బహువచనం. 'నీళ్ళు ఉన్నాయి' సరి, 'నీళ్ళు ఉంది' కాదు.
Some everyday words are plural in form even though English treats them as one substance: నీళ్ళు (water) and పాలు (milk). They therefore always take ఉన్నాయి, never ఉంది. To ask about them, add the question -ఆ to the verb: నీళ్ళు ఉన్నాయా?
వండు → వండుతున్నాను. 'నేను కూర వండుతున్నాను.'
వండు is a plain -ఉ verb: వండుతున్నాను, వండుతున్నారు, వండుతున్నాడు. What is being cooked stands bare in front of it, exactly as with తిను: కూర వండుతున్నాను. And a kitchen is a వంటిల్లు — the cooking word వంట joined to ఇల్లు, the house word you learnt in level 1.
