ఏమిటి → ఏమి → ఏం. క్రియ ముందు 'ఏం' చెబుతారు: 'ఏం తింటున్నారు?'

You met ఏమిటి in level 1, standing at the end of a sentence with no verb: మీ పేరు ఏమిటి? Put a verb after it and it becomes ఏమి, and in ordinary speech that shortens once more to ఏం. So ఏం తింటున్నారు? is what you will actually hear. Nothing else moves — ఏం sits in the very slot the answer will fill, immediately before the verb.

తిను — తింటున్నాను, తింటున్నాడు, తింటున్నారు. తాగు — తాగుతున్నాను, తాగుతున్నాడు, తాగుతున్నారు.

తిను 'eat' pulls its stem in before the ending: తింటున్నాను, తింటున్నావు, తింటున్నాడు, తింటున్నాము, తింటున్నారు. తాగు 'drink' does not change at all: తాగుతున్నాను, తాగుతున్నాడు. Telugu keeps the two verbs strictly apart — you eat అన్నం and you drink పాలు, and never the other way round.

'నేను అన్నం తింటున్నాను.' — 'అన్నం' మీద గుర్తు ఏమీ లేదు. మాట మారలేదు.

Notice that అన్నం and పాలు carry no ending of their own. In these first sentences the thing eaten or drunk simply stands bare in front of the verb; the object marker -ని / -ను comes in level 3. And ఆకలి is the noun 'hunger' — for now say it on its own, ఆకలి!, the way మోహన్ does, because the full sentence needs a case ending you have not met yet.

ఇప్పుడు మీరే అడగండి — 'ఏం తింటున్నారు?' తరువాత జవాబు చెప్పండి — 'నేను అన్నం తింటున్నాను.'

Ask the question out loud, ఏం తింటున్నారు?, and answer it yourself: నేను అన్నం తింటున్నాను. Then do the same pair with తాగు — ఏం తాగుతున్నారు? … నేను పాలు తాగుతున్నాను. Say what the person next to you is having too, and watch that last syllable: అతను అన్నం తింటున్నాడు.
