Explanation

English 'we' hides a choice that Telugu forces you to make. మేము means my group but not you — మేము ఇక్కడ ఉన్నాము leaves the listener outside. మనం takes the listener in: మనం ఇక్కడ ఉన్నాము means you and I are here together. Choose wrongly and you will be understood, but the warmth will be in the wrong place, so it is worth getting right from the first day.

You already know the near-far pair for things — ఇది and అది — and for places, ఇక్కడ and అక్కడ. For people the same contrast appears with a different shape: వీళ్ళు for the ones beside you and వాళ్ళు for the ones further off, with ఎవరు as the question of the row. Look for the ఈ-sound of nearness in వీ- and the ఆ-sound of distance in వా-.

The verb follows the pronoun. మేము and మనం both take ఉన్నాము; వీళ్ళు, వాళ్ళు and అందరూ all take ఉన్నారు, the same ending you met on ఆయన ఉన్నారు in lesson 7. అందరూ means 'everyone', and because everyone here is people, it always takes this ending — never ఉంది.

'those people, over there' — ఏది? Which word means 'those people over there'?
Everyone is here.
మేము ఇక్కడ ________. We are here.
We (you and I) are here.' Arrange the words.
Match the Telugu with the English.

Use it

This is the end of level 1, so say the whole thing aloud in one go: greet, give your name, your town and your language, then place yourself with Now do it for a group — మేము ఇక్కడ ఉన్నాము — and again including your listener, మనం ఇక్కడ ఉన్నాము. Finish with the five questions you can now ask a stranger:
