వివరణ · Explanation

ఎ- కుటుంబం: ఏమిటి · ఏది · ఎవరు · ఎక్కడ · ఎలా · ఎందుకు · ఎప్పుడు · ఎంత · ఎన్ని.

Every question word in Telugu begins with the same sound, ఎ or its long partner ఏ. Learn them as one row and the whole set becomes a single fact instead of nine separate ones: ఏమిటి what, ఏది which, ఎవరు who, ఎక్కడ where, ఎలా how, ఎందుకు why, ఎప్పుడు when, ఎంత how much, ఎన్ని how many. From now on, hearing an ఎ at the head of a word is your signal that a question is on its way.

ప్రశ్న మాట తన చోటులోనే ఉంటుంది. 'మీరు ఎలా ఉన్నారు?' — 'నేను బాగున్నాను.'

Nothing moves to the front to make a question. The question word simply sits in the slot the answer will fill, so మీరు ఎలా ఉన్నారు? and నేను బాగున్నాను have the very same shape. బాగున్నాను is the standard reply and is worth learning whole. A question word can also stand quite alone: ఎందుకు? by itself is a complete and very common thing to say.

'ఎంత' — ఎంత తెలుగు, ఎంత హిందీ. 'ఎన్ని' — ఎన్ని భాషలు, ఎన్ని ఇళ్ళు.

Two words share the English 'how much'. ఎంత asks about an amount nobody would count — how much Telugu, how much water, and from level 2 onward how much something costs. ఎన్ని asks for a number of separate things and pulls its noun into the plural: భాష becomes ఎన్ని భాషలు, ఇల్లు becomes ఎన్ని ఇళ్ళు. The numerals themselves wait until level 3, so for now answer ఎన్ని by simply listing what you have — and answer ఎప్పుడు the same way, since the time words arrive in level 2.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఇప్పుడు మీరే అడగండి — 'మీరు ఎలా ఉన్నారు?' జవాబు — 'నేను బాగున్నాను, ధన్యవాదాలు.'

Open with మీరు ఎలా ఉన్నారు? and answer it aloud: నేను బాగున్నాను, ధన్యవాదాలు. Then run the whole ఎ- row out loud, one word a second — ఏమిటి, ఏది, ఎవరు, ఎక్కడ, ఎలా, ఎందుకు, ఎప్పుడు, ఎంత, ఎన్ని — until the nine sound like one word with nine endings. Finish by asking someone మీ భాషలు ఎన్ని? and answering it for yourself.
