Listen

Hello! Who is here?
I am. My name is Rādha.
Is Sīta here?
No, Sīta is not here. Her town is Vijayawāḍa.
And is he in? (of an elder)
He is not in. I am the one here.
All right! Is your house the one over there?
Yes, my house is over there.

Explanation

ఉంది says that something is there. It is the form for a thing — ఇక్కడ ఇల్లు ఉంది, 'there is a house here' — and, in the singular, the form for one woman as well: సీత ఇక్కడ ఉంది. A woman and a thing sharing one ending is a real and permanent feature of Telugu; the two part company only in the plural, much later. Notice too that ఉంది alone carries the whole of English 'there is'.

The ending changes to match who is spoken of: నేను ఉన్నాను for yourself, ఉన్నారు for మీరు and for a group — and, the part worth pausing over, ఉన్నారు for one person spoken of respectfully. ఆయన ఉన్నారు is a single elderly man, yet the verb wears the plural ending, because in Telugu respect is shown by plurality. For a friend or a younger man the plain form is అతను ఉన్నాడు.

Each positive has its own negative: Keep both well apart from కాదు in lesson 4. కాదు denies what a thing is — ఇది నా ఇల్లు కాదు, this is not my house. లేదు denies that it is there at all — ఇక్కడ ఇల్లు లేదు, there is no house here. English answers 'no' to both; Telugu never mixes them up.

Stand where you are and say Then look around the room and name three things that really are there, each with ఇక్కడ … ఉంది, and one that is not, with ఇక్కడ … Finish by asking after two people — one with ఉందా? and one respectfully with ఉన్నారా? — and answer each of them twice, once with అవును and once with లేదు or లేరు.
