చేసి — తరువాత
Having done: the -i converb

Father will come home and drink tea.

వివరణ · Explanation

మొదట అన్నం తిన్నాను. తరువాత బడికి వెళ్ళాను. — అన్నం తిని బడికి వెళ్ళాను.

Two sentences with the same subject can be joined into one. Change the first verb to its -ఇ form and the two actions run together in the order they happened: అన్నం తిని బడికి వెళ్ళాను. This form is called the క్త్వార్థకం, and it is how Telugu tells almost everything — a speaker will chain three or four of them before letting a sentence end.

చేశాను — చేసి. వచ్చాను — వచ్చి. తిన్నాను — తిని. చూశాను — చూసి. వెళ్ళాను — వెళ్ళి. చదివాను — చదివి.

Build it from the past stem you learnt in level 4: take off the personal ending and put -ఇ in its place. Note the spelling — the past is చేశాను with శ, but the converb is చేసి with స, and the same holds for చూశాను beside చూసి. తిను gives తిని with a single న, not the doubled one of తిన్నాను.

నేను తిని వెళ్ళాను. ఆమె తిని వెళ్ళింది. వాళ్ళు తిని వెళ్ళారు. — నేను తిని వెళ్ళలేదు.

Two rules keep this easy. First, the converb never changes: తిని is the same for నేను, ఆమె and వాళ్ళు, because only the last verb carries tense, person and మహత్తు agreement. Second, both actions must belong to the same person — if the subject changes, you need two full sentences. The last verb also decides the negative: నేను తిని వెళ్ళలేదు means the going did not happen, not the eating.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

మీ ఉదయం ఒకే వాక్యంలో చెప్పండి — 'నేను లేచి, స్నానం చేసి, టీ తాగి, పని మొదలు పెట్టాను.'

Tell your whole morning in one sentence. Start with లేచి and add as many converbs as you did things — స్నానం చేసి, టీ తాగి, అన్నం తిని — and let one finite verb close it in the past. Then say tomorrow's morning the same way, changing only that last verb to the tenseless form: … టీ తాగి, పనికి వెళ్తాను. Notice that not one of the converbs had to change.
