Good. But education alone is not enough; knowledge is needed too.
Yes. Education is in books. Knowledge comes in life.
My grandfather was a great scholar. He read a great many books.
పండితులు means people who have read a great deal.
True. But even a scholar goes on learning in society.
Well said. Education at school, knowledge in society.
వివరణ · Explanation
విద్య, జ్ఞానం, సమాజం, పండితుడు — ఇవి సంస్కృతం నుండి తెలుగులోకి వచ్చిన పదాలు. ఇలాంటి పదాలను 'తత్సమాలు' అంటారు.
Four ordinary Telugu words in this lesson are Sanskrit words taken over unchanged. Telugu grammar has a name for them — తత్సమం — and you will study the term properly in level 7; for now just notice how completely at home they are. Nobody hears విద్య or సమాజం as a foreign word, any more than an English speaker hears 'education' as Latin.
ప్రతి తత్సమ పదానికి ఒక తెలుగు జోడీ ఉంటుంది — విద్య, చదువు; జ్ఞానం, తెలివి.
Very often the Sanskrit word sits beside a native Telugu word of nearly the same meaning, and the pair is not interchangeable. చదువు is what a child does at school and what you ask about at the door; విద్య is the same thing spoken of as an institution or an ideal. తెలివి is the quickness of a particular person; జ్ఞానం is knowledge itself, weightier and more abstract. Choose the native word in conversation and the తత్సమ word when you want the sentence to sound considered.
పండితుడు — మహత్తు, -డు అంతం. బహువచనం పండితులు. స్త్రీలింగం పండితురాలు. మర్యాదకు కూడా 'పండితులు'.
పండితుడు ends in the -డు of a మహత్తు singular, so its plural is పండితులు and its feminine is పండితురాలు. Remember that the plural does double duty as the respectful singular: ఆ పండితులు వచ్చారు can mean one revered scholar, exactly as ఆయన వచ్చారు does. And notice విద్యార్థి — a student — with విద్య standing openly inside it.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
మీ చదువు గురించి నాలుగు వాక్యాలు చెప్పండి. ఒక వాక్యంలో 'విద్య', మరొక వాక్యంలో 'జ్ఞానం' వాడండి.
Say four sentences aloud about your own education. Where did you study — నేను … లో చదివాను. What did you like — నాకు … అంటే ఇష్టం. Then one sentence with విద్య in it and one with జ్ఞానం, and listen to the difference in weight between them. Finish with your own version of శారద's line: విద్య … లో, జ్ఞానం … లో.
